Doubling Tracks in Logic Pro X

This week, I've learnt that there are many elements in a song that we may not noticed, especially for the vocals. It is really common these days for vocal tracks to be doubled in order to give out a 'bigger' sound, often to attract the attention of the listener. The duplicated track will usually have different settings compared to the original track and sometimes we may not noticed this unless we take away the duplicated track and feel that something is missing.

Basic Doubling:

There are a few ways to this but I'll usually just make an exact copy of the track I want to double up. For this instance, I wanted to double up the acoustic guitar.

Then I started searching for sounds and effects that could be added to the duplicated track. As you can see, I've added some delay (Echo) and reverb (Chroma).

I've also adjusted the EQ of the duplicated track as I want this track to be softer than the original and not clash with it.

In this next clip, I am going to play the two tracks individually first to show a difference, then I'm going to play them together and I think that it blends in pretty well.

Since, last week, I've made a couple of changes to Grace's song and all I need to do now is to record the vocals.

Reverb Vs Delay:

Reverb is essentially an ambient effect that gives the feeling of playing in a "room". It is actually great in fixing up dry signals and giving ambiance that's pleasing to the ear.

A delay basically adds an echo effect that can be set to different types, tempo settings and repeats. The repeated sound can stay on the same volume or it could trail off with each repeat.

That's all from me today and as usual I'll appreciate any feedback. I am planning to record the vocals in two weeks time for the song that I'm producing and I'm looking forward to it. Thank you for your kind attention and have a lovely day.

  1. Yes, this is sounding better. The blend of the guitar and keyboard creates a nice layered sound. The addition of the strings is filling in some of the missing frequencies.
