The Detailed Construction of My Song So Far
So in the last posts, I briefly explained about the construction of my song in the form of words and pictures. Hence in this post I'm gonna attempt to elaborate on things further with not just words and pictures, but also with short clips! By the way, the key of this song is C.
*Before I start, I've posted my song and explained the form of it 2 blogs before this one, so please do check it out: http://cyruskmk.blogspot.com/2018/09/my-song-structure-so-far.html
The Funky Bass Line:
The bass line is played by a simple fingerstyle bass because for this song I think it will be more suitable than a synth bass. Before I started recording, I made sure to check that the tempo was suitable and I did some adjustments and finally settled on 95 bpm. I then activated the metronome or click by pressing 'K' on the keyboard and played the bass line.
I recorded the bass line for 4 bars, cycled it to make sure it sounded decent, then copied and pasted it instead of playing the line again for the entire song. There is one particular section where the bass line moves to the IV chord. Now for this part I could either transpose the riff up or I could play the riff and record it, I chose the latter.
Now for the Chorus I decided to record on another fingerstyle bass but it's also fine to record everything on one bass. There are only four notes for the chorus so nothing too complicated.
After that it is just a repeat of the verse and chorus. For the solo section, the same bass line from the verse applies but instead of jumping to the chorus, the last note will be sustained for awhile before jumping to the bridge.
After the bridge, it jumps back to the chorus and then the outro which is a constant repeat of the root chord from the verse without jumping to the IV chord. And this repeat goes on until a fade out occurs.
The Drums:
Now the drums come in on the fourth bar with only the hi-hat before jumping into the verse.
For the chorus I did some slight adjustments to the hi-hat but besides that nothing much.
The drums after that is pretty much the same for the rest of the song. And in this next clip you can see that right after the solo section the drums maintain the same beat while the bass sustains a note before jumping to the bridge. After that it jumps to the last chorus and then the outro.
So essentially you could say that the only change that I made to the drums throughout the song is the hi-hat for the chorus.
Trumpets And Organs:
The trumpets and organs play a simple but essential role as they provide fills during the verse followed by playing a more rhythmic role during the chorus.

Now the drums come in on the fourth bar with only the hi-hat before jumping into the verse.
I achieved this by simply splitting the drum track and editing it.
For the chorus I did some slight adjustments to the hi-hat but besides that nothing much.

- Guitar Parts
- Any other improvements
So essentially what I'm aiming to accomplish next week is to add my guitar parts to the song and start working on a melody. As usual, I would gladly welcome any form of feedback.

ReplyDeleteThe texture is fine. The form is a blues with a little extension, like Watermelon Man.
It's pretty old school. What can you do to bring it into the 21st c.?
Oh that's a good question and idea Mr. George. Will start thinking about it.
